The Fire Brigade was formed in 1874 and St Arnaud's first fire station, now Victoria's oldest, was built in 1883. Although initially relying on a horse-drawn fire engine, horses were never kept at the station. Instead the plan was to appropriate the first horse they could find to pull the engine in an emergency. The firemen also pulled the bucket and ladder carriage to the fires. It has recently been restored by the Historical Society and can be seen in the old fire station.
